Drug, Alcohol and Substance Abuse
Approved May 2008, Review May 2010
Tigh a’Chomainn takes a very serious view of the abuse of drugs, alcohol and other intoxicating substances by anyone who lives or works here.
A co-worker must not present themselves for work when under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substance. Anyone who does so will be sent away from work; they may be suspended from their duties and may be subject to disciplinary procedures.
Accidents, mood swings, varying standards of performance, absences, etc. may indicate a substance abuse problem. Where such a problem is suspected, an informal and private meeting will be arranged with the person. This will not be a disciplinary meeting but a discussion to determine the root of the problem. If they so wish, the person may bring someone with them to such a meeting.
Refusal to acknowledge the existence of a clearly established problem, not maintaining any help agreed, or being unable to cease the abuse which puts the Community’s standards at risk, may lead to a co-worker or resident being asked to leave Tigh a’Chomainn
Should a co-worker possess, supply or use drugs or other substance illegally at Tigh a’Chomainn, the Community has a duty to notify the police and will do so. The co-worker will be suspended pending disciplinary procedures being invoked which may lead to dismissal.
A resident who possesses supplies or uses drugs or other substance illegally will also be reported to the police. Having reviewed the circumstances the Community may ask the person to leave our care.
A similar situation obtains for visitors who possess, supply or use drugs or other substances illegally on the Community’s premises.
